The Army Service Corps, formerly the Royal Indian Army Service Corps (RIASC), operates the mobility of troops, vehicles and ammunition. They provide all the materials required by the army, such as bulk transport convoys and ammunition stocks, replenishments during war, rations and clothing for the troops etc. The Corps also handle postal services in forward areas.
The history of the Supply and Transport Service is as old as the history of organised warfare itself. The Army Service Corps grew from the rudimentary supply and transport organisation of the three presidencies of the East India Company. The ASC has come a long way through more than two centuries of rich heritage behind it. The brave, imperturbable muleteer, the cheerful, resilient MT Driver and the silent, hardworking supply men are the three towering figures on whom the edifice of the corps were built.
There have been reductions in the strength of the SAC and some units are in the process of disbandment, some units are being restructured and the army HQs are also in the process of restructuring. Army Services Corps has worked against heavy odds to provide timely logistic support to the troops deployed in CI Operations in far flung and difficult areas.
